Estonia joins research center
Av
Estonia has become the fourth country to formally support the building of the materials research center European Spallation Source, ESS, in southern Scandinavia. A total of nine countries stand behind ESS Scandinavia.
The Government of Estonia and the Government of Sweden have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in order to attract the European Spallation Source, ESS, to the Baltic Sea Region. The aim with the ESS is to be the world's most powerful materials and life sciences research center using neutrons. It is like a super microscope for looking inside materials and revealing their secrets. This agreement means that Estonia and Sweden will embark upon joint technological development programmes, creating training opportunities, and explore funding opportunities for the construction of the ESS in Lund.
Nine countries have given their explicit support for ESS Scandinavia. These countries are the five Nordic countries, the three Baltic states, and Poland. Out of these nine countries, four have now formalized their support. Sweden has offered to be the host country and has signed Memorandums of Understanding with Poland, Estonia and Denmark. Discussions are ongoing with the other countries in order to formalize their support in a similar way.
