Trots den ekonomiska krisen steg de samlade satsningarna på FoU i Europa med 8,1 procent under 2008. Detta är i linje med tidigare års ökningar visar EU-kommissionens Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard.
Sverige är nummer två på listan över de europeiska länder där forskningssatsningarna ökat mest. Här investerade bolagen 17 procent mer i FoU än året innan medan Italienarna toppar rankningen med en ökning på 20,4 procent.
Allra mest pengar satsas inom life science-området. Globalt sett gick 18,9 procent av FoU-investeringarna till bioteknik och läkemedel under 2008. I USA var motsvarande siffra 25 procent. Många läkemedelsföretag ökade sina forskningsinvesteringar dramatiskt under förra året. Bland annat ökade Takeda Pharm sina anslag med 42,7 procent, Boeringer Ingelheim med 21,9 procent och Schering-Plough med 20,6 procent. Samtidigt minskade Merck, Johnson and Johnson och Pfizer sina investeringar med mellan 1 och 2 procent.
Det är också inom life science sektorn forskningen har högst intensitet enligt rapporten. Intensiteten mäts enligt underökningen som förhållandet mellan investeringarna i FoU och företagets nettoförsäljning. Inom bioteknik och läkemedel låg intensiteten under 2008 på 16,1 procent globalt jämfört med mjukvara och datorteknologi som kommer två i rankningen med 9,6 procent.
Bland de tio bolag som haft snabbast tillväxt inom forskning och utveckling de senaste tre åren återfinns fyra i Europa: Nycomed, Nicox, Ectura och Evotec.
