Pengarna kommer från Familjen Erling-Perssons stiftelse och förhoppningen är att forskningen ska ge nya metoder för snabbare diagnos, prognos och behandling av svåra neurodegenerativa sjukdomar.
Projektet som de 40 miljonerna går till heter ”Metabola markörer för neurodegenerativa sjukdomar” och bedrivs i samarbete mellan Norrlands universitetssjukhus, Umeå universitet och lantbruksuniversitetet i Umeå. Det är ett tvärvetenskapligt projekt som spänner över både medicin, biologi, kemi metabolomik. Inom metabolomik studeras bland annat aminosyror, fettsyror, socker, hormoner och andra signalmolekyler. Sammansättningen av metaboliter speglar hälsotillståndet hos människor och kan därför användas för att upptäcka mönster som är unika för en specifik sjukdom.
– Projektet kommer inte bara ha betydelse för olika neurosjukdomar. Den utveckling av metabolomikforskningen som detta innebär kommer också att ha betydelse för forskning om sjukdomar som astma och allergi, prostatacancer samt infektionssjukdomar, säger Göran Sandberg, rektor vid Umeå universitet.
