I slutet av 2009 förvärvade Biovitrum särläkemedelsbolaget Swedish Orphan för 3,5 miljarder kronor och bildade Swedish Orphan Biovitrum. Sedan dess har kursen för den nya koncernen stigit med 50 procent, men enligt Privata Affärer och di.se finns möjligheter för ökat värde. Under 2011 kan den som investerar vänta sig en ökning på 2,40 till 2,50 kronor per aktie, enligt ekonomisajterna.
Särläkemedelskoncernen själv lyfter fram att det finns stora möjligheter med den marknad på ungefär 7 000 sällsynta sjukdomar, där behandlingar kan få särläkemedelsstatus. Idag finns ungefär 400 läkemedel för dessa sjukdomar. Swedish Orphan Biovitrum beräknade vid sammanslagningen att få intäkter från ungefär 60 sär- och specialistläkemedel. Till 2015 har bolaget målsättningen att dagens produkt- och utvecklingsprojekt ska ge intäkter på fem miljarder kronor.
