År 2006 köpte det indiska företaget Kemwell Pfizers gamla fabrik i Uppsala. Kemwell utvidgar nu den svenska produktionsenheten från 16 000 till 31 000 kvadratmeter. De nya lokalerna kommer att vara klara för produktion under 2010 och kommer att möjliggöra produktion av andra beredningsformer än de tabletter, stolpiller och kapslar som företaget tillverkar i dag.
- Det är naturligt för Kemwell att expandera i Sverige eftersom vi har kompetent personal här. Vi har också många potentiella kunder som efterfrågar produktion i Europa, säger Agneta Bergvall, vd för svenska Kemwell. Kemwell tillverkar läkemedel för bland annat Glaxosmithkline, Johnson & Johnson och Pfizer. Idag arbetar 170 personer på den svenska fabriken och med den nya byggnaden följer fler arbetstillfällen.
- Det är svårt att säga hur många nya jobb den nya anläggningen kommer att skapa, men det handlar om några hundra personer kommer att anställas under en femårsperiod, säger Agneta Bergvall.
Det amerikanska bioteknikföretaget Cepheid har också beslutat att bygga en ny fabrik i Sverige. Hela företagets produktion utanför USA kommer att placeras i Bromma, Stockholm.
Cepheid utvecklar diagnostiska test och har funnits i Sverige sedan 1974 då det amerikanska företaget köpte svenska Sangtech. Företaget har kunder i hela Europa, främst sjukhus.
- Svenskar är väldigt kompetenta inom life science området. Om du ska spela med de stora aktörerna, bör du titta mot Sverige. Det finns billigare länder som producerar läkemedel men där saknas ofta kraven på validerade system, ett område som Sverige är mycket bra på, säger Anita Herrström Sjöberg, vd Cepheid.
Cepheid finns i 60 länder och har en omsättning på 140 miljoner euro. Snart kommer företaget att flytta till 12 000 kvadratmeter nybyggda lokaler där bolagets genetiska tester ska tillverkas. Idag är arbetar 60 personer som i den gamla fabriken på 4000 kvadratmeter. När utbyggnaden är klar kommer antalet anställda att vara 350-400.
