Pengarna kommer från EU:s forskningsdirektorat och ska hjälpa det Uppsalabaserade bolaget Immunsystem IMS att utveckla sitt forskningsprojekt med läkemedelskandidaten Anti-pseudomonas IgY.
Preparatet är ett alternativ till antibiotika vid behandlingar av den aggressiva bakterien Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bakterien kan orsaka kroniska lunginfektioner hos bland annat patienter med cystisk fibros som idag behandlas med antibiotika för luftinfektionen. Då upprepade antibiotikakurer kan leda till antibiotikaresistens och medför biverkningar har en alternativ behandling därför efterfrågats i sjukvården.
Genom att behandla cystisk fibros-patienter med IgY-antikroppar från hönsägg hoppas Immunsystems forskare att sådana infektioner kan förebyggas. Antikroppen de utvecklar är speciellt riktat mot Pseudomonas aeruginosa, men liknande projekt görs idag med tarmbakterien ESBL och metoden ska kunna riktas även mot andra ofta resistenta bakterier.
I fas III-studien ska patienter med cystisk fibros från flera europeiska länder delta. Studien utförs i samarbete med och koordineras av Uppsala universitet.
För att få fram antikropparna vaccineras hönor med bakterien. Som svar på infektionen börjar hönorna producera antikroppar som överförs till ägget. Ägget blandas upp i en vattenbaserad lösning som patienterna får gurgla. I munhålan ska antikropparna angripa bakteriernas rörelsemekanism, även kallad flagellin, och hindra dem från att få fäste i munhålan och svalget vilket ska förhindra att bakterien sprids ner i luftvägarna. Behandlingen behöver upprepas kontinuerligt då bakterierna ständigt omger patienterna i den vardagliga miljön.
Anti-pseudomonas IgY har tidigare beviljats särläkemedelsstatus av den europeiska läkemedelsmyndigheten EMA för behandling av cystisk fibros.
