Det återstår bara formaliteter innan en munspray baserad på cannabis godkänns av Läkemedelsverket. Läkemedlet Sativex tillverkas av det brittiska läkemedelsbolaget GW pharmaceuticals och används för att lindra stelhet hos patienter med multipel skleros, MS.
— Läkemedlet påverkar cannabisreceptorer i hjärnan och har visat sig lindra muskelkramper hos MS-patienter. Det har också visat sig ha en hämmande effekt på MS-specifik smärta, men denna indikation har företaget inte sökt godkännande för, säger Hans Sjögren, överläkare och klinisk utredare på Läkemedelsverket.
Cannabisläkemedlet distribueras i sprayform och ska sprayas på slemhinnan under tungan. Och någon risk för annan effekt än den rent medicinska finns inte, enligt Hans Sjögren.
— Om det används som det är avsett får man ingen kick av läkemedlet. Det rör sig om så låga koncentrationer.
Även om det cannabisbaserade läkemedlet inte är godkänt i Sverige än kan patienter redan idag få tillgång till det genom så kallad licensförskrivning. Behandlande läkare kan ansöka om tillstånd hos Läkemedlesverket för att skriva ut preparatet, och i dagsläget behandlas cirka 50 patienter med läkemedlet.
Läkemedlet är redan godkänt i Storbritannien, Danmark, Tyskland och Spanien för lindring av stelhet vid MS. Godkännandet sker genom en så kallad mutual recognition procedure, vilket innebär att företaget har ansökt om och fått godkänt för läkemedlet i ett land och därefter ansökt om godkännande i ytterligare länder. Dessa godkännanden baseras till stor del på godkännandet i det första landet. I detta fall Storbritannien.
Innan Läkemedelsverket fattar beslut om godkännande i Sverige ska företaget presentera en plan för hur man ska följa upp att förskrivning och distribution av cannabisläkemedlet sker på ett säkert och kontrollerat sätt. Hans Sjögren kan därför inte ge något exakt besked om när läkemedlet väntas bli godkänt att marknadsföras på den svenska marknaden.
