Läkemedelsindustrin har tillsammans med regeringen, Sveriges kommuner och landsting, SKL, läkarprofessionen och apoteksbranschen, tagit fram en nationell läkemedelsstrategi.
Syftet med läkemedelsstrategin är att användningen av läkemedel ska bli effektivare och säkrare för patienter. För att uppnå detta har regeringen och SKL tagit fram fem långsiktiga mål:
- Läkemedel är bokstavligt talat livsnödvändiga. Samtidigt vet vi att felanvändning av mediciner leder till onödiga kostnader och framförallt mänskligt lidande. Därför är läkemedelsstrategin ett viktigt verktyg för att nå medicinska resultat i världsklass, säger socialminister Göran Hägglund.
Läkemedelsstrategin beskriver också sju olika områden som ska utvecklas för att uppnå de långsiktiga målen.
Läkemedelsverket har i uppdrag att följa upp och samordna arbetet med strategin.

- Att i största möjliga mån förhindra felaktig läkemedelsanvändning som resulterar i skador och mänskligt lidande. Minska risken för felmedicinering och olämpliga läkemedelskombinationer.
- Lika vård för alla oavsett kön, etnicitet, ålder, bostadsord, utbildning, ekonomiska förutsättningar, sjukdom eller funktionsnedsättning.
- Kostnadseffektiv läkemedelsanvändning. Priset på läkemedel ska sättas efter hur stor nytta läkemedlet gör för patienten och samhället.
- Skapa förutsättningar för fortsatt svensk klinisk forskning och att säkerhetsställa forskningens kvalitet och implementering.
- Minimal miljöpåverkan.

- Skapa en bättre och säkrare ordinationsprocess och lägga grunden för generisk förskrivning genom nationellt samordnade IT-stöd.
- Öka samsyn och förståelse för ordinerad behandling.
- Utveckla kunskap om och riktlinjer för läkemedel och läkemedelsanvändning för de patientgrupper där detta är mest eftersatt.
- Minska utveckling och spridning av antibiotikaresistens genom en kombination av lokala och globala insatser.
- Utveckla långsiktigt hållbar prissättnings-, prioriterings- och finansieringsmodell för samtliga läkemedel.
- Upprätta en process för ordnat och effektivt införande samt utöka uppföljning av läkemedels användning och effekter.
- Minska läkemedels påverkan på miljön lokalt och globalt.
