Knut och Alice Wallenbergs stiftelse gav i oktober förra året 400 miljoner kronor till Max IV-projektet, under förutsättning att ytterligare finansiering om minst 160 miljoner kronor skulle komma in från en annan finansiär. I dagarna fick projektet in den summan genom ett bidrag från svenska universitet och högskolor.
- Finansieringen vi nu fått in från Knut och Alice Wallenbergs stiftelse och de svenska lärosätena räcker till att bygga upp de första sju experimentstationerna av totalt 30, säger Jesper Andersen, vetenskaplig direktör för Max IV-laboratoriet.
De totala kostnaderna för forskningsanläggningen beräknades i april förra året att uppgå till 2,6 miljarder kronor. Jesper Andersen räknar med att få in finansiering till hela projektet till år 2025.
- Till 2020 ska 20 experimentstationer stå klara, så en möjlighet att få in finansiering är att sälja stråltid till forskningsföretag eller att få bidrag från industrin.
Jesper Andersen påpekar att intresset för forskningsanläggningen redan är stort i de nordiska länderna och även i några av länderna i Baltikum. I och med att både det danska läkemedelsbolaget Novo Nordisk och svensk-brittiska Astrazeneca finansierat Max IV:s föregångare, Max II, har Jesper Andersen förhoppningar att industrin ska investera även i denna anläggning.
- Men vi hoppas även på att få in finansiering från Vetenskapsrådet, säger han.
Max IV är en synkrotronljusanläggning som enligt forskarna ska bli tio gånger bättre än den bästa liknande anläggningen som finns i världen idag. Med tekniken ska forskarna kunna studera olika materials strukturer på molekylnivå. Varje molekyl ska studeras, atom för atom, vilket gör det möjligt för nya framsteg inom bland annat biomedicin, medicin, materialvetenskap och nanoteknologi.
I november 2010 var byggstarten för forskningsanläggningen Max IV som håller på att byggas i Lund och just nu gjuts grunden till anläggningen.
