Svenska forskare har i samarbete med en italiensk forskargrupp hittat en ny substans som kan bli en helt ny typ av behandling av cancer. Substansen, b-AP15, hämmar cellers förmåga att göra sig av med defekta proteiner, något som är nödvändigt för att cellen ska fortleva.
Alla celler producerar proteiner som kan vara skadade. Detta sker i större utsträckning i tumörceller än i friska celler, något som forskarna har utnyttjat. I cellerna finns proteosomer som ansvarar för att rensa bort dessa defekta proteiner så att de de inte ansamlas och orsakar celldöd.
I den aktuella studien har forskargrupper från Karolinska institutet, Uppsala universitet och Istituto nazionale per studie e cura dei tumori i Milano, Italien, sett att substansen b-AP15 hämmar proteosomernas arbete i tumörcellerna i fem olika djurmodeller.
- Den nyupptäckta verkningsmekanismen är mycket lovande. Jag vill dock betona att vi idag inte kan behandla patienter med våra substanser. Men vi hoppas att fortsatt arbete kommer att leda till utveckling av nya läkemedel, säger Stig Linder, professor i experimentell onkologi vid Karolinska institutet, i ett pressmeddelande.
Forskarna kunde även se att metoden hade effekt även på cancertyper som generellt är svårbehandlade med dagens tillgängliga cancerläkemedel. Studien publicerades i Nature medicines nätupplaga den 6 november.
