EU-kommissionen har tagit i med hårdhandskarna och sjösätter nu en handlingsplan för att minska utvecklingen av antibiotikaresistens. Handlingsplanen består av tolv åtgärder som kommissionen och medlemsländerna ska arbeta med under de kommande fem åren.
- Vi måste ta till snabba och bestämda åtgärder om vi inte vill tappa antibiotikaläkemedel som de främsta behandlingarna av bakteriella infektioner hos både människor och djur. De tolv åtgärderna som vi tagit fram ska begränsa spridningen av antibiotikaresistens och stötta utvecklingen av nya antibiotikabehandlingar, säger EU:s hälsokommissionär John Dalli i ettt pressmeddelande.

Att investera i forskning och innovation kommer att innebära att patienterna får den bästa möjliga vården, säger EU-kommissionären för forskning och innovation, Máire Geoghegan Quinn.

- Förhindra mikrobiella infektioner och spridning av dessa.
- Utveckla nya effektiva antibiotika eller alternativ till behandling.
- Samarbeta med internationella partners för att begränsa riskerna för antibiotikaresistens.
- Följa upp och övervaka human- och veterinärmedicin bättre.
- Forskning och innovation.
- Kommunikation och utbildning.
Det ska uppnås genom följande tolv åtgärder:
- Förbättra och öka medvetenheten om lämplig användning av antibiotika.
- Stärka EU:s lagstiftning om veterinärmedicinska läkemedel och foderläkemedel.
- Rekommendera en återhållsam användning av antibiotika inom veterinärmedicin, inklusive uppföljningsrapporter.
- Stärka det vårdhygieniska arbetet på bland annat sjukhus och kliniker.
- Introducera rättsliga verktyg i EU:s nya djurhälsolagstiftning för att skärpa prevention och bekämpning av infektioner hos djur.
- Främja samarbete för att få fram nya antibiotika till patienter.
- Främja arbete med att analysera behovet av nya antibiotika inom veterinärmedicinen.
- Utveckla och stärka multilaterala och bilaterala åtaganden för prevention och kontroll av antibiotikaresistens.
- Stärka övervakningssystem för antibiotikaresistens och antibiotikakonsumtion i humanläkemedel.
- Stärka övervakningssystem för antibiotikaresistens och antibiotikakonsumtion i läkemedel för djur.
- Stärka och samordna forskning.
- Förbättra kommunikationen om antibiotikaresistens till allmänheten.
