Det danska läkemedelsbolaget Novo nordisk har slutat att kontrolltesta sina biologiska läkemedel på djur, skriver Business.dk.
— Vi har kontinuerligt minskat användningen av djur för att testa läkemedel som vi skickar till marknaden och vi har gått från att använda flera tusen per år för att nu använda mellan 1 000 och 2 000. Från och med nu använder dock inga djur för det ändamålet och det är ett viktigt mål vi har uppnått, säger Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, forskningschef på Novo nordisk, till Jyllands Posten.
Kontrolltesterna på möss har gjorts för att kontrollera styrkan hos bolagets biologiska läkemedel och att de inte är infekterade med bakerier eller virus. I framtiden kommer Novo nordisk att ersätta djurförsöken med laboratorietester. De läkemedel som berörs är bland annat insulin, medicin mot blödarsjuka och tillväxthormon.
Men även om bolaget går över till laboratorietester för denna typ av kontroll kommer man även i fortsättningen att vara beroende av djurförsök i i utvecklingen av nya läkemedel. Förra året använde bolaget nästan 63 000 försöksdjur.
