Alla patienter är nu rekryterade till en forskarinitierad klinisk fas II-studie med Diamyd Medicals diabetesvaccin Diamyd. Totalt ska 50 barn från fyra års ålder ingå.
Fas II-studien, som går under projektnamnet Diaprev-it, ska utvärdera diabetesvaccinets förmåga att förebygga eller fördröja sjukdomsförloppet hos barn som löper ökad risk för att utveckla typ 1-diabetes. Studien drivs av forskare från Lunds Universitet och finansieras av forskningsanslag.
– Jag tror det finns god chans att diabetesvaccinet har effekt vid förebyggande behandling av barn som ännu inte har insjuknat i typ 1-diabetes. I Diaprev-it vaccinerar vi barnen tidigt i sjukdomsprocessen då de ännu har många betaceller kvar att rädda och sjukdomsprocessen inte är lika aggressiv som hos nyinsjuknade, vilket borde öka chansen att vaccinet ska ha effekt, säger Helena Elding Larsson, studieledare, i ett pressmeddelande.
Vaccinet utvecklas av forskningsföretaget Diamyd Medical och har testats i flera olika studier på olika patientgrupper både med barn och vuxna i både USA och Europa med olika framgång. Under slutet av första halvåret 2011 föll bolagets fas III-program pladask då resultaten från samtliga studier visade negativa resultat. Vaccinprojektet som utvecklats under 17 år och kostat bolaget 500 miljoner kronor lades på is men resultaten från fas III-programmet utvärderas fortfarande. Bolaget har möjlighet att nyttja studieresultaten från preventionsstudien.
– Det är mycket spännande att följa barnen i den här preventionsstudien som är den första i sitt slag. Studien ger värdefull information som kan ligga till grund för större preventionsstudier. Visar det sig att förebyggande behandling med vårt diabetesvaccin minskar risken för att utveckla typ 1-diabetes hos de här barnen så innebär det ett stort framsteg för diabetesforskningen, säger Peter Zerhouni, vd för Diamyd Medical, i ett pressmeddelande.
