Det nystartade CRO-bolaget Clinical Trial Consultants, CTC, har varit igång i ett halvår.
Verksamheten drivs i Quintiles före detta lokaler för tidiga kliniska prövningar på Akademiska sjukhuset i Uppsala och har plats för tolv patienter. Här ska man bedriva kliniska prövningar i tidig fas och bakom företaget står personer med bakgrund i det nedlagda Berzelius Clinical Research Center, Bcrc, i Linköping och Quintiles.
– Vi vill värna om infrastrukturen inom life science i Sverige och ta till vara på den kompetens och erfarenhet som annars kanske hade försvunnit när Bcrc och Quintiles lade ner, säger Bengt Dahlström, vd för CTC.
Grundarna bedömer också att det finns ett tomrum på marknaden som de kan fylla.
– Eftersom två stora CRO-bolag har försvunnit tror jag definitvt att att det finns en marknad och att vi har en bra chans att fylla hålet som uppstod.
Verksamheten kommer att bygga mycket på personliga kontakter och affärsidén är att sälja in den specialistkunskap som finns inom företaget.
– Vi har stor erfarenhet av tidiga studier och att ge patienter nya läkemedel för första gången. Vi har också specialistkunskap inom bland annat PET-teknik och mikrodialysstudier och det är något vi kommer att samarbeta med Akademiska sjukhuset i Uppsala om.
Till en början kommer företaget att drivas av fem personer och ha projektanställd personal.
Just nu har företaget två studier igång och enligt Bengt Dahlström är fler på väg in. Trots att marknaden för kliniska prövningar har tappat mark i Sverige är han hoppfull för CTC:s räkning.
– Många väljer bort Sverige som prövningsland för att det är för dyrt och för svårt att rekrytera stora patientgrupper. Men eftersom vi fokuserar på de tidiga faserna är vi inte beroende av stora patientgrupper utan kan konkurrera med bra och gedigen forskning och ett bra genomförande av prövningarna.
Förutom Bengt Dahlström har bolaget grundats av docent Fredrik Huss och professor Folke Sjöberg, båda tidigare verksamma vid Bcrc.
