I september fick det amerikanska läkemedelsföretaget Advanced Cell Technology klartecken att starta den första europeiska kliniska studien med embryonala stamceller för behandling av ögonsjukdomen Stargardts sjukdom. Sedan tidigare driver bolaget också en studie där effekten av stamcellsbehandlingen utvärderas som behandling av makuladegeneration. Nu presenterar bolaget positiva delresultat från de båda studierna.
Stargardts sjukdom är en form av makuladegeneration, en sjukdom som bryter ner synreceptorer i ögat och successivt försämrar synskärpan. Stargardts sjukdom är en ovanligare form av makuladegeneration och ofta drabbar barn i åldrarna 6-12 år och som vanligtvis leder till blindhet. Genom att behandla patienter med dessa ögonsjukdomar med embryonala stamceller hoppas forskarna kunna ersätta de förstörda synreceptorerna.
De aktuella delresultaten innefattar två patienter, en 51-årig patient som drabbades av Standarts sjukdom i tonåren och en 78-årig patient med åldersrelaterad makuladegeneration. Bägge patienterna behandlades med embryonala stamceller under hösten. Fyra månader efter behandlingen kunde forskarna se att stamcellerna levde vidare i ögat och att patienterna hade mätbara synförbättringar. Hittills har forskarna inte heller se några allvarliga biverkningar av behandlingen. Den ena studien, som där patienter med Stargardts sjukdom ingår, ska totalt omfatta 12 patienter och beräknas vara klar i september 2013. Den andra studien, med patienter som lider av åldersrelaterad makuladegeneration, ska totalt behandla 12 patienter och beräknas slutföras under juli 2013.

I mitten av oktober tog EU-domstolen beslut i ett flera år gammalt patentmål som innebär att det inte går att ta patent på processer och forskning som utgår från embryonala stamceller där det krävts att ett embryo dödats.
