Det cannabisbaserade läkemedlet Sativex får efter godkännande av Läkemdelsverket nu användas för behandling av MS i Sverige. Läkemedlet används för att lindra spasticitet, de muskelkramper som många MS-patienter lider av.
- Det är mycket välkommet att vi nu har ett nytt läkemedel att erbjuda patienter som lider av spasticitet till följd av multipel skleros. Det har länge varit ett problem att vi inte har haft fler behandlingsalternativ att erbjuda patienter, och vi har inte sett en utveckling på området på långtid. Vi saknar i hög grad terapeutiska verktyg för MS-patienter vars livskvalitet kraftigt försämras av dessa symptom, säger Tomas Ohlsson, professor i neurologi vid Karolinska Institutet, i ett pressmeddelande.
Cannabisläkemedlet doseras i sprayform och ska sprayas på slemhinnan under tungan. Det har förts fram oro för att läkemedlet skulle kunna vara beroendeframkallande, men någon sådan risk föreligger inte enligt Hans Sjögren, överläkare och klinisk utredare på Läkemedelsverket.
- Om det används som det är avsett får man ingen kick av läkemedlet. Det rör sig om så låga koncentrationer, sade Hans Sjögren i en tidigare intervju i Biotech Sweden.
Sativex tillverkas av det brittiska läkemedelsbolaget GW Pharmaceuticals och är sedan tidigare godkänt i Kanada, Storbritannien, Danmark, Tyskland och Spanien för lindring av muskelstelhet vid MS. Trots att läkemedlet inte har varit godkänt i Sverige förrän nu har svenska patienter även tidigare i viss mån kunnat få tillgång till preparatet via licensförskrivning.
