Läser du nummer 2 av Biotech Sweden, som når prenumeranterna i början av vecka 8, målas en komplex bild upp. Där börjar vi i Södertälje, där slaget från de globala trenderna just nu smärtar. Vi rör oss vidare till Lund som befinner sig i nästa fas. De har haft två år på sig att fylla tomrummet efter Astra Zenecas förra stora nedskärning. Där finns nystartsanda och entreprenörer som vägrar höra de kritiska invändningarna. I numret kan du också läsa om de stora forskningsprojekten Epihealth och Lifegene som tydligt belyser hur ambivalenta svenska myndigheter och rättsinstanser är till landets enorma förmåga att skapa register. Till bilden läggs sedan historien om riskkapitalet. En ny studie visar att det minskat drastiskt de senaste åren, ett faktum som drabbar små forskande life science-företag hårt.
Samtidigt finns en stark politisk vilja att svensk akademisk forskning ska kommersialiseras. Resultatet har blivit att stora summor pengar satsats på olika innovationssystem runt våra universitet och högskolor. Men det tycks mest ha landat i en missriktad välvilja. Resultatet är ett spretigt system där inget blir flygfärdigt. I nummer två är vårt tema kommersialiserad forskning och vi rotar runt bland de här frågorna. I numrets vetenskapsreportage om hepatit C blir du påmind om vad allt i grunden handlar om. Alla som debatterar framtiden för life science och medicinsk forskning bör hela tiden minnas den underliggande vetenskapliga lynnighet som präglar allt. I fallet med hepatit C är det ett tolv år gammalt vetenskapligt genombrott som nu håller på att leda till en mängd revolutionerande nya läkemedel.
En annan del av det klimat som råder belyses i intervjun med Thomas Lönngren. I tio år var han chef för den europeiska läkemedelsmyndigheten EMA som godkänner läkemedel baserat på säkerhet och effekt. I dag är han minst lika intresserad av den hälsoekomoniska aspekten av ett nytt läkemedel. När det regulatoriska systemet konstruerades i Europa var det godkännandet som avgjorde om patienten skulle få tillgång till läkemedlet eller inte, konstaterar han. I dag är det lika avgörande för läkemedlets framgång om det tas in i förmånssystemet eller inte. Därför uppmanar han alla små utvecklande företag att så tidigt det bara går fundera på om statskassor runt om i världen kommer att vilja betala för deras innovation om den lyckas nå marknaden.
Allting hänger ihop. Väl värt att minnas för dem som nu tar sig an uppgiften att stärka Sverige efter ett kraftigt decimerat Astra Zeneca.
