Nu inleds ett treårigt forskningsprojekt kring implantatmaterial som kan hjälpa kroppen att återskapa skadade organ. EU satsar femton miljoner kronor på det treåriga projektet som ska koordineras av professor Jöns Hilborn vid Uppsala universitet. Projektet har valts ut som ett av de sex mest excellenta projekten i Europa
Självläka skador
Målet är att designa och styra mänskliga celler så att de framställer inplantatmaterial som blir nedbrytbara av kroppen. Materialet tillverkas från en kontrollerad cellinje, på en så kallad klätterställning av nedbrytbar polymer. Själva cellerna tas sedan bort för att undvika avstötningsreaktioner från kroppen. Endast materialet och ställningen blir kvar, och kan sättas in i kroppen för att hjälpa den att självläka en skada. Ställningen görs i två versioner, en som bryts ner på några veckor, och en som bryts ner efter sex månader.
Minskad smittrisk
Den nya metoden kan ersätta djur och människor som donatorer av material, vilket minskar risk för spridning av sjukdomar. Ett första användningsområde kan bli återskapande av hud, vid exempelvis brännskador. Andra områden kan bli att reparera skadade blodkärl, tarmkanaler eller urinblåsor, och i framtiden även skador på hjärta eller hjärna. Deltagare i projektet är Uppsala universitet, RWTH-Aachen, Swiss Frederal Institute of Technology, Lausanne Research Hospital, University College London, Karocell AB och Manchester University.
